A stunning Child’s Blanket with indigo, yellow, and two shades of raveled red cloth.
Blankets were originally woven as items of personal clothing. Most of the “wearing blankets” date from the 1700′s to 1875. Horizontal blankets were often referred to as Chief Blankets and were originally decorated with simple stripes. Vertical blankets called “serapes” were also decorated with stripes or more elaborate designs. In contrast, women’s blankets were often more muted and smaller than Chief blankets while child’s blankets were usually vertical with striped designs of fine detail. The weavers also wove many saddle blankets for their horses.
